The school year was to start tomorrow, and most of her friends were prepared. They had gone shopping with their parents, and they had their school supplies and their new school clothes ready for the first day. But one little girl did not know what she was going to do. She did not have new school clothes. She didn’t have a pair of jeans to wear, old or new. But she was determined and she was a fighter. So she climbed into the donation bin of a local charity and began to sort through the bags of donations to find something she could wear.
After she sorted through others’ cast offs the for a while, she found them…. a pair of jeans. And they weren’t too bad. They would work. She carefully climbed out of the bin and made her way home, satisfied that she would have something “new” to wear to school the next day. She planned to take care of them, and keep them as clean as she could. She was ready to start school now.
Sadly, this life experience is not unusual. There are many children, through no fault of their own, that do not have new school clothes for a new school year. In 2024, Kris’ Hometown Legends decided to raise money to help some of these students with a hand up. They partnered with Great Plains Youth & Family Services to identify children and families that were experiencing life difficulties that prevented them from being able to shop for school clothes. Grandparents raising grandkids, single moms, those facing illness or unexpected challenges.
KHL produced a concert to raise funds, and with the help of the community, 38 students were clothed for the new school year. It was a humbling experience fo everyone involved.
